It is with great sadness we announce the death of Alan Charles MacKenzie, age 76, of P.E.I. After a short but aggressive struggle with cancer, the death occurred peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones.
Alan is survived by his partner Janet Acorn; and his children, Eddie MacKenzie (Diane MacKenzie), Sue MacKenzie (Allen Campbell), Bruce MacKenzie and Catherine MacKenzie; and grandchildren, James, Joshua, Isaac, Liam, Zachary, Carlin, Carter, Jackson, Samantha, and Mason.
He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, David MacKenzie (Marjorie Lewis), Mary MacKenzie (Blaine Hrabi), Gene MacKenzie, Heather MacKenzie (Darrell Poulton) and Linda MacKenzie (Jeremy Stiles).
He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Jemima Blanche (MacDougall) MacKenzie; infant daughter, Barbara-Jane MacKenzie.
Alan was born in Charlottetown, PEI on June 30, 1947 to parents Charles and Jemima Blanche MacKenzie (nee MacDougall) of Westmoreland, PEI. As the eldest of 6 children Alan grew up in Westmoreland PEI, spending his early years working on the family farm before leaving to pursue his post-secondary education. He attended Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan University in Charlottetown where he received his bachelor’s degree in Arts, majoring in history. Alan had a love for learning and knowledge that continued throughout his life.
Alan spent parts of his life in Fredericton and Summerside, where he and his former wife Jeannette raised their 4 children. He was an active member of the Lions Club and proud, longstanding member of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Alan continued his education and received his Master’s in Education, focusing on Community Agency Counselling from the University of New Brunswick. He had a passion for helping others, especially people struggling with addiction and spent a considerable amount of time volunteering in the AA community. He spent his life surrounded by books and the pursuit of self-discovery and spiritual awareness. He loved reading, storytelling, long distance hiking, family history, travel and above all else friendship and connection.
The family would like to thank the staff of Palliative Home Care and his angel of care and partner, Janet for their care and compassion.
Resting at Central Queen’s Funeral Home, New Glasgow for visiting hours on Thursday, July 27, 2023, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow at 11:30 a.m.

The memorial service for Alan MacKenzie, was held on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Central Queen’s Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow. The service was conducted by Pastor Chris Gallant. Heartfelt words of memories were shared by David Weale, Dwight Parkman, Sue MacKenzie and Carolyn Lord. The music included audio recordings of: “My Way” by Elvis, and “The Parting Glass” by the Dubliners; as well as “I Will Sail My Vessel 'Til The River Runs Dry”, and “I would Walk 500 Miles”, both sung and played by Blaine Hrabi. Bagpipes were played by grandson, Zachary Campbell. Honorary pallbearers were Desmond and Carolyn Nantes, Darlene and Dave Bell, Raymond and Mary Myers, Barb and Bill Campbell, Jerry and Cindy Arsenault, Bill and Ann Cameron, Harvey and Marcia Cairns, Wendy and Frank Toole, Garth and Anne MacLean, David Weale, Jerry Hopkirk, and Donnie Corbett. The bearers of honour were Ron Murphy, Donnie MacKinnon, Jamie Landry, Jason Acorn, Duane Gallant and Howie Rackham.
