If a Death Occurs
The Evangeline Funeral Home should be notified immediately by the hospital, nursing home, other institution, clergy or family member.
Our phone number is (902) 854-2828 and is answered 24 hours a day in French or English.
After the funeral home has been notified of the death, the administrator will contact the next of kin or the person responsible, to set a time to make the necessary arrangements. This meeting normally takes place at the funeral home.
Personal information about the deceased will be needed as well as a set of clothing and a picture. The time and place of the visitation and funeral will be decided at this time. The clergy or celebrant must be contacted before times for the visitation and funeral can be set. At this time also, the notices for the radio and newspaper will be prepared.
The loss of a loved one is a very traumatic experience. Our funeral home staff are specially trained to travel through this difficult time with you, with compassion and understanding. We can help you regardless of the circumstances or place of death, even if it is outside of Prince Edward Island.
When you come to the funeral home, you will need the following information about the deceased:
- Full Name
- Health and Social Insurance Numbers
- Marital Status
- Name of Husband or Wife
- Occupation
- Date and Place of Birth
- Father's Name and Birth Place

Preplanning
One of the services the funeral home offers is assisting families in pre-planning funerals. More and more people recognize that planning in advance lessens the burden on those you love. There is peace of mind in knowing that everything is in order.
There are different reasons for planning ahead. It lets you make arrangements according to your own wishes. If funeral services are paid for in advance they are guaranteed at today's prices. The total amount can be paid at once or by installments agreed to by you and the funeral home. Your money is held in trust and there is no risk of loss.

History
The Evangeline Funeral Home is a co-operative venture of the people of the communities surrounding Mont Carmel, Egmont Bay, Wellington, Richmond, Grand River, and Miscouche, PEI.
Our Funeral home started in 1987. Currently we have a membership of 1000 members.
A nine member board and one manager oversee the working and operation of the funeral home.
The Evangeline Funeral Home offers full funeral services in a very attractive and functional building on a beautiful site with ample parking.
We also offer French and English services at all times.
Donations
Memorial donations are accepted at the Evangeline Funeral Home for any charity requested by the family. The family receives a card identifying the donor.
Evangeline Funeral Home issues a temporary receipt for donations to the donor at the time of the donation. Official receipts for income tax purposes are issued to the donor by the organization receiving the donation.
Membership
When a person becomes a member of a co-operative, he or she has the same rights as every other member regardless of the number of shares held. Each member has the right to be notified of meetings of the membership, to attend meetings and vote on all matters brought before such meetings.
Each member of the co-operative is also entitled to receive a copy of the audited financial statements each year. The members also approve of the auditor appointed at each annual meeting. Each member can also stand for election to the Board of Directors if he or she is interested in being more involved with the overall administration of the affairs of the co-operative.
A membership share in Evangeline Funeral Co-op Ltd costs $50 and applications can be obtained by contacting the funeral home or any of the directors.
Principles of Co-operation
For better understanding of co-operation and the funeral co-operatives it may be best to explain the seven principles of co-operation. The seven principles outline the responsibilities every co-op has to its members and communities.
- Open and Voluntary Membership
Anyone who will accept the responsibility of membership and who can use the services may join the co-operative.
- Democratic Participation
At the local co-op level, each member has one vote, regardless of the amount of shares held. Member-owners control the co-op and have a responsibility to participate in decision making.
- Limited Interest on Share Capital
Co-ops are organized to provide services and are not for investment purposes. Generally, no interest is paid on share capital.
- Surplus Earnings Returned to Members
Surpluses, after expenses and reserve fund holdbacks, are returned to members in proportion to the use they make of the co-op.
- Co-operative Education
Member education is a vital part of co-operatives. Each co-op has an obligation to provide opportunities to help members, elected officials, staff and the general public, in understanding co-operatives and their role.
- Co-operation Among Co-operatives
All co-ops should actively co-operate in every practical way at local, national and international levels.
- Concerns for Community
Co-operatives accept the fact that they are vital and an important component of the communities in which they exist and must take steps to encourage the health of the community.
