Davis, William Ernest (Ernie)
January 16, 2025

William Ernest (Ernie) Davis (Born: October 2, 1939 – Napanee, Ontario) passed away with strong presence of mind and his humour in tact at John M. Gillis Lodge, January 16 2025. Ernie grew up in Napanee, and briefly lived in Manitoba before returning to Ontario. He married his one true love Annie Laura (Lolly) (née Collins) in 1962 and they had a strong, loving, fun partnership throughout their lives.
He worked in data processing, at Bata Shoe Company and Mutual of Omaha, and as a salesman and delivery driver for Doyle’s Bakery and Wonder Bread. He was fondly known as the Bread Man. He also became a small engine repair expert, eventually turning a hobby into a successful business.
Active in his community, he served as Sheffield’s Fire Chief and a firefighter, was involved in town council, and helped fundraise for local projects. Ernie and Laura moved their five kids to PEI in 1976, and had a sixth child here. Ernie travelled around the county, selling monuments for Vere & Beck. Later, he went to work at Montague Building Supplies, which became Kent, becoming many people’s Paint Man. He returned to selling monuments for Nelson Monuments.
Ernie didn’t turn out to be a great farmer but the kids felt lucky to have had a pony and dogs and assortment of other animals at various times. It was a surprise to all that he made friends with an independent house cat named George in recent years.
Ernie had a keen interest in genealogy, politics, Island and Canadian history and what was going on south of the border, and maintained his terrific sense of humour. He enjoyed dancing with his wife, road trips, fancy used cars, card games, and his friends. Ernie and Laura built their dream home at St Andrew’s Point, Lower Montague.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Laura, in August 2019 and parents William (Bill) Jefferson Davis and Laura Mae (née Asselstine). He is survived by his children, their legacy: Diane (Leo), Jeffrey (Murielle), Erin (Shawn), Sandra (Thomas), Billie Jo (Normand), and Stanley (Angela), along with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and extended family.
A service will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025 and Ernie will be laid to rest with Laura at St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Montague, PEI. We are so very thankful to Lower Montague neighbours, Home Care and the Dr John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge. Donations may be made to the Lower Montague Women’s Institute, if you feel so inclined.
