Courtney, Evan George September 7, 2024

We, the loving family of Evan George Courtney of High Bank, PEI, are saddened to announce his passing on September 7, 2024. He was in his 89th year. Devoted husband of almost 65 years to Donalda (nee MacKay). Fondly remembered by Donalda and their children: Lynn Manning (Chris), Carolyn Courtney (Paul Seviour), Ruth Courtney-Beck (John Beck), Bill Courtney (Josie) and his sisters Beatrice and Gail Courtney of Kilbride, NL, and sisters-in-law Lynn MacKay and Jessie Dennison, 12 adored grandchildren: Paul (Sarah), Christine (Jon), Ian (Mary-Claire); Allyson (Aaron), Sean (Melanie), Stephen (Heather), Emma; Katie (Jeff), Emily (Spencer), Jenny (Josh); Jillian, David; and 15 precious great-grandchildren : Ira, Evie; George, Teddy; Wally; Callum, Russell; Sloan; Clark, Vivian; Isla, Ellie, Howie; Caleb & Zoe. He loved his family.

Evan was born November 9th, 1935 in Kilbride, the Dominion of Newfoundland. The eldest of four children, Evan served in the R.C.M.P. for 25 years, retiring at the rank of Staff Sergeant. While stationed in PEI, Dad met Mom, a young nurse. They married and then spent the majority of Dad’s time in the force in Newfoundland and Labrador, posted to detachments in Nain, Stephenville, St. Georges, and St. John’s. Dad went on to have careers with NL government in fire arm legislation, and developing and teaching a security course at the Community College. Eventually they retired to the MacKay homestead in High Bank where they enjoyed 32 happy years watching their family and gardens grow and thrive.

Never one to sit idle, Evan was a long distance runner and loved any outdoor family activity: fishing, berry picking, hiking, x-c skiing, kayaking, and working around the farm. He also loved photography, music, reading, painting, and daily walking hand in hand with Mom along the Shore Road.

Poppy, as he was known to his grand and great grandchildren, delighted in playing games, fishing, and giving rides in his two wheeled garden wagon. It didn’t matter what the chore, Poppy made everything more fun.

He sang “I’se the B’y “ to each and every child, and had a special knack of quietly engaging everyone in fun and made up games.

Dad was lovingly cared for, to the end, by Mom, the Love of his Life.

Predeceased by his parents George and Gladys Courtney, parents-in-law William and Christine MacKay, brothers and sisters-in-law David (Paddy), Sterling (Maureen), Leona (Oliver Giddings), Catherine (Basil Irving), Angus (Maisie), Wayne, and Robert Dennison.

A Celebration of Life will take place on October 5, with a visitation from 1:30-2:30pm and funeral service at 3:00pm from the Funeral Home Chapel. Private committal to follow at Little Sands Cemetery. Donations in Evan’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice.

There are different reasons for planning ahead. It lets you make arrangements according to your own wishes. If funeral services are paid for in advance they are guaranteed at today's prices. History

The Southern King's & Queen's Funeral Home is a co-operative venture of the people of the communities of Southern King's & Queen's areas. It is owned by the Southern King's & Queen's Funeral Co-operative which was incorporated in 1994. We became the seventh funeral co-op on PEI. Presently we have membership of approximately 270.

A nine member board oversees the working and operation of the funeral home. We held our first annual meeting in April 1995. We began by using local churches for wakes and funerals. In 1996 we purchased 1.9 acres of land in Murray River on which a house was located. The house was renovated so we could hold wakes and small funerals on site. In 2002 we expanded our facility by building on to the present building thus providing extra space and a chapel.

The Southern King's & Queen's Funeral Home offers full funeral services at its newly renovated and spacious facility featuring a chapel, wake room, family / reception area, and ample parking. There is live-streamig of funerals. We are located on Highway # 4 just north of the village limits of Murray River.

Donations

Memorial donations are accepted at the Southern King's & Queen's Funeral Home for any charity requested by the family. The family receives a card identifying the donor.
Official receipts for income tax purposes are issued to the donor by the organization receiving the donation.

We do accept donations by mail to the funeral home (9120 Commercial Road, Rte. #4, Murray River, PE C0A 1W0) or by etransfer to funerals@eastlink.ca (be sure to include your mailing address in the note section so a receipt  can be issued).

Membership

When a person becomes a member of a co-operative, he or she has the same rights as every other member regardless of the number of shares held. Each member has the right to be notified of meetings of the membership, to attend meetings and vote on all matters brought before such meetings.

Each member of the co-operative is also entitled to receive a copy of the audited financial statements each year. The members also approve of the auditor appointed at each annual meeting. Each member can also stand for election to the Board of Directors if he or she is interested in being more involved with the overall administration of the affairs of the co-operative.

A membership share in Southern King's and Queen's Funeral Co-op Ltd costs $50 and applications can be obtained by contacting the funeral home or any of the directors.

Principles of Co-operation

For better understanding of co-operation and the funeral co-operatives it may be best to explain the seven principles of co-operation. The seven principles outline the responsibilities every co-op has to its members and communities.

  1. Open and Voluntary Membership
Anyone who will accept the responsibility of membership and who can use the services may join the co-operative.

  2. Democratic Participation
At the local co-op level, each member has one vote, regardless of the amount of shares held. Member-owners control the co-op and have a responsibility to participate in decision making.

  3. Limited Interest on Share Capital
Co-ops are organized to provide services and are not for investment purposes. Generally, no interest is paid on share capital.

  4. Surplus Earnings Returned to Members
Surpluses, after expenses and reserve fund holdbacks, are returned to members in proportion to the use they make of the co-op.

  5. Co-operative Education
Member education is a vital part of co-operatives. Each co-op has an obligation to provide opportunities to help members, elected officials, staff and the general public, in understanding co-operatives and their role.

  6. Co-operation Among Co-operatives
All co-ops should actively co-operate in every practical way at local, national and international levels.

  7. Concerns for Community
Co-operatives accept the fact that they are vital and an important component of the communities in which they exist and must take steps to encourage the health of the community.
